For Kids
BVO
As a method of making my local maker space more personable to the children that frequently tour the space, I built a version of BMO from Adventure Time that better represents UT Austin: BVO. This model has an inscription on the side, low-poly horns, and a dedicated iPad Mini 2 inside. The iPad is used to play tour videos of the space, as a screen for retro games, and looping emotions.
I think something about BVO really resonates with students. In the world of engineering, so much time is spent on some intelligence-based machismo that it's easy to forget how much happiness simple things can bring. BVO represents just that by greeting every student who walks into the maker space with a smiling face 🙂
Mini Fame
BVO ended up being loved more than I initially expected! To a younger generation, its difficult to understand engineering without examples that are closer to home, and to these kids, BVO was a great visual for the potential of additive manufacturing.
